Poynton 2-2 Warrington Tn Res
Rylands Res 1-0 Poynton Res
The season returns to PFC with 1sts and 2nds starting a busy schedule of league games. Both teams having new managers giving the club a fresh feel for what we hope will be a successful season.
The 1sts welcomed league newcomers Warrington Town reserves to open their season with the new management team of Andrew Cowell and Paul Marchbank hoping to teach a young Warrington side a lesson or 2. Poynton started on the front foot pressing Warrington high up the pitch but the away side could have took the lead but for some good defending and a fine save from O’Reagan. Warrington got a lucky break on the half hour when Bailey was judged to have brought down the Warrington winger in the box despite clearly making contact with the ball. With the penalty neatly dispatched Warrington doubled their lead after a good ball from the right was volleyed home at the far post from close range.
The new management team had to now inspire a shell shocked Poynton clearly not expecting to be 2 goals down against this organised young outfit. The second half started quite evenly. Tindall trying his luck from range to be thwarted by the Warrington keeper whilst Simpson struggling to find his timing with his head. The introduction of Toole and Kirby seemed to inspire some needed pace and energy into the attack as Poynton started to threaten more frequently. Tindall broke down the right only to fire across the goal whilst a penalty shout for handball did not convince the referee. Poynton were then given a lifeline on 75 minutes following a clear hand ball in the box and the resulting penalty converted by Makin. Poynton continued to press sensing the young Warrington team were hanging on, then finally Simpson finds the target with his head from a tight angle to equalise with 2 minutes to spare.
Tremendous credit to Warrington Town who will, on this form, provide tough competition to most opponents this season. Poynton meanwhile must look to improve if they are to mount another promotion challenge this season.
Reserves manager 'Dawsy' was greeted with 2 away games in 3 days starting Thursday evening with a trip to Gamesley. A much changed squad introducing several graduates from last season’s U21s saw a comfortable 3-1 win with goals from Brew, Cairnes and Rhodes. Then on Saturday they travelled to Warrington only to go down to a single 1st half opener from Rylands.
Both teams are in action this week at the Sports Club. On Tuesday 1sts entertain another new team to the league, Sale Utd and on Thursday the Reserves play local rival Linotype Cheadle Heath Nomads.
