Poynton FC V Cheadle linotype
Poynton hosted 1st division Cheadle in the 2nd round proper of the Cheshire cup. This was the same Cheadle team who had knocked Poynton out both the Cheshire cup & Stockport cup the previous season 0-1 & 0-3 respectively.
However this Poynton team is an entirely different animal. New additions, New set up, New mindset & this shone through throughout the 90 mins. Injuries to Derrick saw centre half Bridge step in to midfield with Ian Williams coming into the centre of defence. Likewise keeper O’Reagan’s absence meant experienced Andrew Cowell started in goal.
The game started at a frantic pace with Linotype trying to get the ball forward quickly to their wide men and isolating Poynton’s full backs. However the home side stood firm and pushed on themselves. With the game even a long ball from Cheadle saw their number 10 seemingly reach the ball before Poyntons on rushing centre half nudging the ball past both defender and keeper before lashing in from a tight angle. On closer inspection it was clear the striker had used his hand to control & maneuverer the ball past Poynton’s last man. However both linesmen & referee missed the incident and the goal stood. 0-1
Given the sides recent history it would have been easy for the goal to knock Poyntons confidence but the home side set about getting themselves back in the game almost immediately. The game was starting to heat up and Poynton came out on top of a number of 50-50 challenges. The home side were rewarded for their efforts and commitment when 5 mins before half time CRANK curled a 30 yard free kick in to the top corner. That’s the midfielders 4th Free kick of the campaign! 1-1
The second half Poyntons belief began to shine through and the home side pegged Cheadle back in to their own half. Pressing high up the pitch The red & blacks began to force the opposition into a number of errors. It was one of these errors which proved costly. Losing the ball in their own box, to the alert Tindall a high rash challenge followed with the referee awarding a clear penalty. Up stepped CRANK to claim his second of the game. 2-1
While Poynton were in control such is the quality a team such as Linotype possess concentration must be maintained at all times. In this case Poyntons best form of defence was attack pinning their opponents back in search of the killer goal. Tindall went close with an acrobatic overhead kick which went just wide. However the in form striker was not be denied when his brave run and attempt on goal was met by a wild challenge from the Cheadle keeper. While the away sides captain did get the ball the challenge was high and was out of control.
Up stepped Crank to convert his 8th goal of the season & 5th Goal in 3 matches to put the game beyond any doubt. 3-1
Poynton were able to see out the remaining 10 mins to cap a very positive performance and instil the belief that this team can not only play in the 1st division but compete as well.
The red & blacks have been drawn against Upton AA from Merseyside in the third round which is sure to be a cracker. As for Cheadle they don’t have to wait long to get their revenge as the two sides meet again in the Stockport cup.

Team: A. Cowell, I. Bailey, C. Allen, D. Chadwick, J. Wright (c), I. Williams, A. Oakes, T. Bridge, A. Crank, R. Tindall, (D, Warrender) P. Garvey (N .Linford)
