Poynton beat Linotype Cheadle Heath Nomads 1-0 to lift the Stockport and District Senior Cup for the first time since 2009.
A goal from Arian Kalantari midway through the 2nd half sealed a well deserved victory and ease some of the hurt of losing last season's final 1-2 to Mellor FC.
Poynton started well and were the stronger of the two sides in the 1st half but were unable to find a breakthrough with both Simpson and Challinor going close. Linotype CHN improved early in the 2nd half but Poynton rediscovered their momentum and should have been ahead but for a fantastic save onto the post from a Challinor volley. The breakthrough eventually came following a counter attack and a solo effort as Kalanatari raced between two Linotype defenders and calmly place the ball into the corner of the net. Poynton should have doubled their lead when Challinor was unable to finish, volleying wide at the far post and Toole was unlucky with his strike firing just over the bar from 25 yards out.
This made for a tense last 10 minutes with Linotype inevitably piling forward. Poynton, however, with the help of a man of the match performance from keeper O'Regan, held out and claim what would be their 6th Stockport Cup win since 1985.Attachments:
