Poynton 3-4 (AET) Upton AA (Cheshire Cup 3rd round played at Upton AA)
All other games postponed.
Upton AA 4-3 poynton (120 min) (3-3 at 90 min)
The fixture was moved to Upton AA after a long period of rain Thursday evening and Poynton needing to catch up on matches. The game needed to be played and what a game it turned out to be.
With Poynton missing 6 players due to work, injuries, holidays and others commitments some personnel changed from the side that won 3-0 at Congleton, but the system stayed the same. With Upton coming from the West Cheshire Division 1, this would be a tough game for Poynton plus with Upton now having the home advantage would make it even harder.
Poynton started the game very brightly and were using the ball well. With Mark Faulkner creating a great chance for Rick Tindall who chipped the out rushing keeper for his effort just to go the wrong side of the crossbar. Poynton kept moving the ball well especially down the right hand side where Linford and Allen were causing Upton major problems. It was this deadly combination which gave Poynton an early lead when this time Linford popped up on the left hand side and weaved his way into the penalty area to pick out Allen who smashed the ball into the Upton net from just inside the penalty area. It was an excellent goal and 2 in 2 games for the young player. Minutes later Upton attacked the Poynton goal with Maplecroft being the main danger. It was not long before Upton scored after some good work down there right and the finish was clinical. Poynton didn’t let the goal affect them with some very positive play. Once again it was that right hand side with the Linford Allen combination with a superb pass from Allen matched with a great run from Tindall who confidently went round the keeper to score his 9th of the season to put Poynton 2-1 up. Poynton were in the mood playing some excellent football. The impressive Tindall was causing Upton some real problems when he was bought down 25 yards from goal. Linford curled the ball around the wall for the ball to go underneath the keeper to send Poynton 3-1 up.
With half time looming it looked as if Poynton were going to press on and Upton looking at a long afternoon. But the game was to take a turn just before half time. Upton broke down the right with a cross which looked to of been over hit but was headed back into a dangerous area. A well struck shot was prevented from hitting the back of the net when Jake Wright reactively put his hand out to stop the shot. The ref had no choice but to send player off. A penalty was given which gave Upton a great chance to get back in the game. But the chance wasn’t taken when O’Regan saved the penalty. Poynton went in 3-1 up but a man down. The 2nd half started with the game evenly matched
Poynton had to work hard and keep the 2 banks of 4 nice and compact. Both sides were creating chances but Poynton’s O’Regan was having to pull of some outstanding saves. At the other end Tindall, Linford and Faulkner were still giving Upton plenty to think about. With 20 minutes left Poynton gave away a penalty. This time the outstanding keeper couldn’t help his team mates when the penalty was well converted. The game was turning into a cracking cup tie. With Upton pushing on playing 3 5 2 against the 10 men trying to gain the advantage with the extra man. But Poynton were well up to the challenge the tireless Oakes, Garvey, Faulkner now joined by the impressive Danny Makin were winning their duel in the centre of midfield. With 10 minutes remaining Ian Williams, Poynton's centre half had to come off with a hamstring injury. He had had an excellent game alongside Danny Chadwick at the back with Upton’s number 10 Maplecroft a constant threat. Faulkner settled in nicely alongside Chadwick, Shaw and Allen. Poynton looked as if they were going to hang on with minutes remaining as they played in a confident manner. This cup tie was to throw up more drama in the dying seconds of the game. Upton swung in a deflected cross into the Poynton penalty area which Poynton cleared to the edge of the box only for it to be smashed back passed O’Regan into the roof of the net. A great strike 3-3 and extra time.
Once again Poynton regained their composure and started to retain the ball and looked the better side. They managed to create some chances with Tom Connor a threat at set pieces. Plus Tindall and Makin working the Upton keeper. The 2nd half of extra time came with a quick break from Upton and Poynton were caught out. A last ditch attempt to get the ball resulted in a foul, a free kick was given and Poynton lucky not to go down to 9 men. The free kick was brilliantly executed into the top corner. 4-3 in Uptons favour. What now for Poynton. How would they react? The response was brilliant. They didn’t stop and put real pressure on the Upton goal with a last minute goal clearance which would have taken the game to penalties. This was a fantastic cup game and a credit to both teams.
